SPAIN – After strong showings of Pinoys in The Voice Ireland and the Netherlands, this time a Filipina from Barcelona has made it to La Voz (The Voice) Kids in Spain.
Fourteen-year-old Mariz Molina Perez passed the blind auditions with her rendition of Carly Simon’s “Let the River Run.”
Of the three judges, only Spanish pop singer Malú turned her chair, enough to send Perez to the next round.
After welcoming Perez to her team, Malú chided jokingly the two other judges, “You are a bit deaf. Do you need cotton swabs? You should be envious of my team.”
The two other judges nonetheless praised Perez for her performance.
“You have a wonderful voice. I was astounded. I wasn’t expecting that such voice comes from that tiny body,” singer Rosario said in Spanish.
Spanish pop superstar David Bisbal pointed out that the beginning of the song was a bit out of control but as she went on, he was indeed convinced that he had to push the button for Perez.
Perez responded and confessed that she had colds, which impressed the judges even more.
Almost 10,000 kids all over Spain tried out but only 93 made it to the show’s blind auditions.
“Masayang-masaya po ako dahil nakapasok po ako. Very thankful po ako at nakapasa po ako,” Perez said in an interview with ABS-CBN.
Perez is not a novice in singing contests as she became a semifinalist in another talent show in Spain “Tú sí que vales!” and ABS-CBN’s TFCKat.
“What has just happened to me is a gift of god. I’m proud of it,” said Perez in Spanish.
This fan of Angeline Quinto, Sarah Geronimo and Lea Salonga also performs in many Filipino gatherings in Barcelona, which explains why most Filipinos already had a hint that she would audition in The Voice Kids Spain.
The Filipino community in Barcelona has been following the show’s blind auditions, which started two weeks ago, anxiously hoping that another Filipina will make it to the hit singing contest after the success of Alexandra Masangkay, another Filipina who became one of the grandfinalists in 2011 of the defunct hit reality TV singing contest “Operación Triunfo”, Spain’s counterpart of American Idol.
